CST is a very soft touch, hands-on therapy that utilizes the body’s own ability to heal itself to restore balance and wellness in the soft tissue that affects the nervous system.
The session is done with the client fully clothed lying on a massage table. Using a gentle touch, the therapist works with the soft tissue or fascia that touches, connects and integrates with all other structures of the body. Using the cranial rhythm (the rhythm of the fluid around the spinal cord and brain) and determining the degree of free mobility of the fascia, the therapist can identify areas of dysfunction and immobility. A session may last anywhere from 15 minutes to 2 hours, but normally for 1 hour.
The therapist’s goal is to enhance craniosacral and fascial motion to free up restrictions in the body, which relieves stress, decreases pain and improves overall health. A properly functioning fascial system assists the central nervous system in becoming more relaxed, capable and resilient for the individual throughout life. As clients discover that there can be relief for their chronic aches and acute pains, feelings of frustration, discouragement and confusion are often relieved as well.
Craniosacral therapy uses the craniosacral system which is composed of a membrane that is waterproof that encases the brain and spinal cord and carries within it cerebrospinal fluid. The pressure and volume of the fluid go up and down. That makes it a hydraulic system, which needs to be free to move all the time because the fluid should be moving and bringing nutrients to all the neurons and taking away wastes and so forth. With Craniosacral Therapy, we have several entries into this system--most of them through bony attachments or through direction of energy or pulling of fascia--for alleviating any restrictions that might have accumulated due to injuries or illnesses. This therapy improves the health of the brain and spinal cord, which in turn, affects the whole body.
